- colloid- a mixture in which small particles will not dissolve, but remain in place rather than settling (example: gel and foam)
- dissolve- to mix with a liquid so that it completely becomes part of the liquid
- distill- to make a liquid pure by heating it until it becomes a gas and then cooling it until it is a liquid again
- heterogeneous mixture- a mixture in which the parts are clearly different shapes and colors; different throughout
- homogeneous mixture- a mixture in which all of the parts are the same throughout
- mixture- a combination of substances that can be physically separated from one another
- solubility- the ability of a substance to be dissolved in a liquid
- solute- a substance that is dissolved by a solvent to create a solution (ex: drink powder poured into a water)
- solution- a mixture in which a solid and a liquid, or two liquids, are mixed so evenly that it is not possible to see the separate particles
- solvent- a substance that dissolves a solute when forming a solution (ex: water)
- substance- the matter which all things are composed of
- suspension- a mixture in which medium sized particles are left floating (or settled) at the top or bottom of the mixture

- argument – a statement, reason, or fact for or against a point; a process of reasoning
- central idea – the focused idea of a specific text; it is expressed as a complete thought and highlights the author’s main point
- claim – to state or assert that something is true (synonymous with “thesis”)
- conclusion – 1) a reasoned deduction or inference; 2) the final statement of a discourse or essay, usually containing a summary of the points and a statement of opinion or decisions reached
- counterclaim – a claim made to offset another claim, sometimes the opposition’s claim
- development – the part of a text in which a theme or themes are developed or explained and elaborated upon
- explicit – fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated; leaving nothing merely implied
- inference – our perceptions of the meanings of words that are unstated; the process of arriving at a conclusion based on what can be assumed from a text
- opinion – a personal view, belief, or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty (antonym for fact)
- persuade – to convince a person to believe something by urging or appealing to reason or understanding
- support – to corroborate or argue for an opinion or claim by providing substantial evidence
- theme – the overarching message, abstract idea, or universal truth that emerges from a text’s treatment of the subject matter; it is expressed as a complete thought and can be applied to many situations across time

- problem – a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome
- solution – a means of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation

- momentum- the mass of an object multiplied by its velocity

- position- location of an object
- potential energy- energy that is stored in the position or structure of an object

- propaganda – ideas or statements that are often false or exaggerated and that are spread to help a leader or their government

- gene- a part of a chromosome that includes instructions for inherited traits
- genotype- the genetic instructions for an organism’s traits
- phenotype- the actual physical traits that an organism has (examples: height, eye color, hair color)
- unique- very special; unlike anything else
- offspring- the young of an animal or plant; a person’s child
- recessive trait- an inherited trait that is hidden, or masked by another trait
- dominant trait- an inherited trait that dominates, or masks, another trait
- inherited trait- a characteristic that is passed from parent to offspring

- assembly line- a line of machines or workers, in a factory, that build something by passing work from one station to the next until it is finished
- capitalism- an economy where people and companies own things, and not the government
- corporation- a large business
- economy- how things are made and sold in a country or region
- factory- a building or group of buildings where products are made
- inequality- when some people have more rights or better opportunities than others
- invention- something created, such as a new device
- inventor- someone who creates something new
- labor union- a group of workers formed to protect their rights and interests
- monopoly- complete ownership or control of something
- strike- to refuse to work until an employer agrees to demands
- yellow journalism- when a newspaper story exaggerates the truth to sell more issues and get people’s attention; similar to fake news stories

**Test: Tuesday, November 13th**
- fossil – remains of living things preserved in Earth’s crust
- sedimentary rock – a type of rock formed when sediments that were deposited in ancient times were pressed together and it became hard
- igneous rock – a type of rock formed when liquid rock cools and becomes hard
- metamorphic rock – a type of rock formed when existing rocks are heated and pressurized underground. This causes both physical and chemical changes in the original rock.
- era – a unit of time measured in millions of years
- eon – a unit of time measured in billions of years
- extinction – when a species has died out completely
- natural disaster– a sudden and terrible event in nature that may result in extinction of a species
- species – a group of animals or plants that are similar and can produce young animals or plants
- ecosystem – all living and non-living things that exist in a particular environment
- tectonic plates – pieces of Earth’s crust and mantle that are divided into several plates that glide over the mantle
- volcano – a mountain with a hole in the top or side that sometimes sends out rocks, ash, lava, etc. in a sudden explosion (eruption)

- alibi – an excuse that a suspect uses to show that he or she was somewhere other than at the scene of the crime when the crime was committed
- cliffhanger – a story or situation that is very exciting because what is going to happen next is not known
- clue – a fact or object that helps to solve mysteries
- crime – an act that is against the law
- detective – a person who investigates mysteries and gathers information
- evidence – something that helps prove who committed the crime
- mystery – something that is secret and unknown
- red herring – a false lead that throws the investigator off track
- sleuth – another name for a detective
- suspect – a person who is believed to have possibly committed the crime
- victim – someone who is harmed or suffers some loss because of the crime
- witness – someone who saw the crime being committed and can provide some information

- plot – the chain of events that makes up a story
- setting – the time and place of a story
- complications – problems that arise as characters struggle to reach their goals
- protagonist – the main character in a story
- antagonist – the character or force in conflict with the protagonist
- plot pyramid – the basic structure used to organize most fictional stories
- exposition – the first part of the plot, in which characters, setting, and basic situation are revealed
- inciting incident – the event that sets the story in motion
- rising action – the main part of the story where complications arise
- climax – the most exciting or intense part of the story for the protagonist; usually a turning point
- falling action – the events that follow the climax and lead to the resolution
- resolution – the end of the story, in which conflicts are resolved
Week #7 Word List (Literacy)
**Test: Monday, October 8th**
- point of view – the position from which a narrator sees and understands what is happening
- first person – told from the viewpoint of one of the characters using the pronouns “I” and “we”
- second person – the narrator tells a story using the word “you,” placing the reader immediately and personally into the story
- third person limited – the narrator is an outside observer who focuses on the thoughts and feelings of only one character
- third person omniscient – the narrator is an outside observer who can tell us the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in a story
- third person objective – the narrator reports the facts of a story as a neutral and impersonal outside observer
- perspective – a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something
- cite – quote (a passage, book, or author) as evidence for or justification of an argument or statement
- inference – a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
- context clues – hints that an author gives to help a reader figure out the meaning of unknown words
- synonym – a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase
- antonym – a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the opposite as another word or phrase
Week #6 Word List (Social Studies)
**Test: Monday, October 1st**
- free state- one of the states before and during the Civil War that outlawed slavery
- slave state- one of the states before and during the Civil War that allowed slavery
- border state- the states that fell in between the Union and the Confederacy, and had a hard time deciding which side to join
- emancipate- to free someone from someone else’s power
- hardtack- Civil War soldier’s food; a bread-like food that was hard and generally not very appetizing
- memoir- a written account where someone describes past experiences
- retreat- moving away from your enemy in battle because they are winning; to run away
- surrender- to agree to stop fighting because you know you will not win
- railroad- a system of tracks that trains travel on; very important for moving men and supplies during the Civil War
- ironclad ship- a new type of ship during the Civil War that was covered in armor
- Anaconda Plan- the Union’s plan to surround the Confederacy and stop supplies from getting to the Southern armies
- Underground Railroad- a network of houses and other places that abolitionists used to help slaves escape to freedom in the northern states or in Canada before the Civil War

- dynamic: characterized by constant change, activity, or progress
- emphatic: tending to take decisive action
- exasperated: showing strong feelings of irritation or annoyance
- instinctive: prompted by natural impulse or capacity
- meticulous: extreme or excessive attention to detail
- mischievous: causing trouble
- quiver: to shake or move with a slight trembling motion
- raspy: a harsh sound; hoarse
- spitefully: malicious; to feel hatred with the intent to irritate, annoy, or thwart
- vivid: something that produces a clear or strong impression

- tenth – one of ten equal parts
- hundredth – one of one hundred equal parts
- thousandth – one of one thousand equal parts
- exponent – says how many times to use a number in a multiplication sentence
- parentheses – the symbols used to show which operation or operations in an expression should be done first
- addition – the process of finding the total number of items when two or more groups of items are joined
- subtraction – the process of finding how many are left when a number of items are taken away from a group of items
- multiplication – the process to find the total number of items in a given number of groups
- division – the process of sharing a number of items to find how many equal groups can be made or how many items will be in each group
- order of operations – a special set of rules which gives the order in which calculations are done in an expression
- decimal – a number with one or more digits to the right of the decimal point
- fraction – a number that names a part of a whole or a part of a group

- writing process – an approach to writing that follows five steps in sequential order
- prewrite – the first step in the writing process, during which we brainstorm our ideas
- draft – the second step in the writing process, during which we write our rough draft
- revise – the third step in the writing process, during which we clarify our writing and check the order, vocabulary, and focus
- edit – the fourth step in the writing process, during which we check conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar)
- publish – The fifth and final step in the writing process, during which we share our neat, finished work with a public audience
- complete sentence – a group of words that expresses a complete thought; contains a subject and a predicate
- simple subject – the main word that tells whom or what the sentence is about
- simple predicate – the main word that tells what the subject is or does
- action verb – a word that expresses something a person, animal, or object can do
- helping verb – a word that supports the main verb in a sentence
- linking verb – a word that connects the subject of a sentence to additional information about the subject

- myopia – a condition that makes it difficult to see objects that are far away
- inspire – to make someone want to do something

- heroic – showing great courage
- fete – to honor or entertain (someone) lavishly

- constellation- patterns in the stars identified by ancient cultures
- light year- the distance that light travels in one year (5.88 trillion miles)
- nebula- a huge cloud of gas and dust; where stars are born
- orbit- to travel around something in a curved path such as a planet, moon, space shuttle, etc.
- planet- a large object that orbits a star
- protostar- a beginning star
- revolution – one complete trip around the sun
- rotation- a complete spin on an axis
- satellite- an object that moves around a much larger planet; a machine sent into space that moves around the earth, moon, sun, or planet
- star chart- a map of the night sky created by astronomers to help locate a star or constellation
- supernova – an exploding star
- terrestrial planet- one of the inner planets in the solar system; characterized by rocky surfaces
